Of course it was a lie. We all had told it before, but it is never contradicted. The words “It's fine.” or “Don't worry.” were only ever meant to steer a conversation in a certain direction. She reached for her coffee. “It's fine, thank you,” she said with a smile on her lips. “Are you sure?” She hesitated. Until now, the conversations between her and him had been quite simple. She said good morning and he asked her how she was doing. As little interaction as possible was always her goal. After that, both of them carried on as usual, but this time he was so unsure. “I can make the coffee again if you like?” “No, no, no stress. You guys are really busy right now. Don't worry.” And there it was again, the lie that slipped so easily past her lips. In reality, nothing was fine. Her alarm clock hadn't gone off this morning, her dog had chewed up her favorite sneakers, and now she also got the wrong coffee order. It could hardly get any worse. As she stepped out the door, she took a sip of her coffee and realized it could get worse. She inconspicuously threw it into the trash with the words “I've always hated black coffee.”
